Whether you're moving into a new home or are looking to freshen up the rooms where you spend most of your time, one of the easiest ways to make a space your own is by installing new curtains. The colour, pattern and style of the curtains can make a big difference to the impact of a room and can make or break the whole area.
However, the first thing you need to do to make sure you get the perfect curtains for your home is to work out the size you need. This is an important step before you even begin to think about style or other visual choices as it prevents you from falling in love with curtains you can't actually install. Read on to find out more about how to measure your windows for curtains below.
The best way to work out the standard width of the curtain you need is to measure the curtain pole. You could use a measuring tape for increased accuracy or, if you don't have one, a ruler will do. You will need to measure along the curtain pole or rail, all the way from one end to the other. You don't need to include any fittings in the measurements, however.
If you have decided on hanging curtains, you can simply add a few inches to your curtain pole measurement. This will ensure your curtains overlap in the middle, blocking out light and draughts.
If you're opting for a style like pleated or eyelet, you will need to double your curtain pole measurement to allow for how the material folds up and overlaps horizontally. Again, you will need to add a couple more inches to this to allow enough material for the curtains to overlap at the centre.
Now, you need to establish where you want your curtains to fall to, which could be grazing your windowsill or all the way to the floor.
If you are opting for eyelet curtains, you will need to measure from the top of the pole all the way down to the place where you want your curtains to stop. If you're using rings and hooks to hang your curtains, you should measure from just below the pole, at the bottom of the curtain ring down to where you want your curtains to end. For track curtains, you should measure from the top of the track down to the desired end point of your curtains.
